World Day for International Justice also known as International Justice Day or Day of International Criminal Justice. This day is celebrated all around the world on 17th July every year to promote international criminal justice and as a way of supporting the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Why July 17 was Chosen?
To curb or restraint the horrific crimes such as torture, slavery, rape, genocide, disappearances, forced expulsion and many other crimes like this on July 1st 2002, when the jurisdiction of the ICC began. July 17 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the Treaty which created the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Since that day in 1998, 120 countries have signed and adopted that treaty. It was also known as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Al the countries which signed the treaty had agreed upon and accepted the jurisdiction of the ICC.
Purpose of World Day for International Justice
As the 21st century saw many disturbances, wars or crime all around the world. Most important of them is the two World Wars. A number of innocent people were killed during that wars. That century also saw many other crimes such as genocide, forced expulsion and violence against women.
So the purpose or aim of this day is to promote peace and security and well-being of the world by preventing serious crimes. And to provide social and criminal justice to the victims.
How the Day is celebrated?
The day is celebrated in many ways. People around the world host many events to promote international criminal justice. NGOs and Government officials conduct speeches and seminars to highlight the crimes and the laws. And also the rights of the victims. They also stress upon the promotion of peace and security in the world.
Bloggers and writers write blogs or articles on websites and newspapers to mark the importance of the criminal justice. And the role of ICC in the promotion of peace and security in the world. As ICC is the first independent and international institution who is capable of trying people accused of the violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.
Many TV and radio programs are broadcasted and the campaigns on social media also highlight the need for criminal justice.
Is it a Public Holiday?
World Day for International Justice or the Day of International Criminal Justice is not a public holiday. It is just an annual observance. Public life do not affect by this day.
The day is observed to create awareness among the people about the criminal law and to promote peace and security of the people around the world.
Peace, security and well-being of every nation is compulsory in order to develop. So when we talk about the crimes, we can see a number of victims throughout the globe.
In order to promote peace and security these types of days are important and fruitful to be observed. They will create awareness in the people about crimes and how to safe ourselves and what action is to be taken for the criminals.
