International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26th every year since 1989. In 1987 the General Assembly of the UN instituted a resolution 42/112. This day is observed to stop the use of drugs and its illegal trade. And to free the society from the drugs abuse.
Drugs and their Production
International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed all over the world to highlight the dangers of drug abuse and to discourage and stop its illegal trade. As more and more people have begun using drugs like heroin, opium and marijuana all over the world. The United Nations and other world organizations are actively trying to control the growth, supply, sale and use of drugs in different countries.
The above drugs are mostly produced in two areas of Asia. One is called the “Golden Triangle”, and it covers huge tracts of land in Thailand, Laos and Burma.
The other area is called the “Golden Crescent”, which covers Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.
In Thailand, for example, marijuana is grown on quite a big scale and is exported to Australia, Canada and the US.
In Pakistan the production of opium and heroin has reduced no doubt, but still it is quite high. These are illegally taken out by various agencies. In Pakistan poppy cultivation is highly discouraged by thy government. The government started operations against poppy cultivation.
Dangers of Drugs
Young men and women in different countries of the world are using the above mentioned drugs. These drugs affect their body and mind so badly that they cannot work properly.
Sometimes they need money for drugs. And when they cannot earn enough money they become criminals. They can join gangs of thieves or robbers or terrors. As drug taking becomes common, the society begins moving towards destruction.
Drug addiction is a very bad habit. It is very difficult to give up. It affects the lungs, nervous system, stomach disorders, liver diseases, and many other mental disorders.
That’s why keeping such ill effects of drugs the UN have started to take action and trying to save the societies from the destruction caused by the use of drugs.
What People Do on This Day?
There is no public holiday on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The day is observed to create awareness about the drug abuses.
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is doing the best to check the illegal trade of drugs. This organization launches the campaigns about the ills of using drugs. It also encourage the people to actively participate in these campaigns to create awareness about the drugs abuses. and play their role to stop the people to use drugs.
International Day Against Drug Abuse 2019 Theme
Every year International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed to emphasize the ills of drugs and its illegal trade. The theme for this day in 2019 is Health For Justice. Justice For Health.
The theme is reflecting the association of the health and justice. It means that when people are addicted to the drugs they do injustice with their health. So there is a time to do justice with health.
Now there is a need to join hand with hand to bring the society out of the drugs. Government of the countries must encourage the NGOs and the private sector to help these people who are indulged in the drug abuse. And to save the society from destruction.
