Christmas is an annual festival celebrated by the Christians all over the world on 25th December as a religious festival. Christmas celebration includes decorating the house, spend time with family and friends and enjoy festive meals.

This festival commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. The day of Christmas is observed with zeal and devotion by the Christians and there is public holiday for Christmas.

Every country and every society have different traditions to celebrate Christmas but mostly Christians decorate their homes and malls with Christmas tree which is a tradition sparkling lights are used to decorate the tree.

Moreover on the day of Christmas people cut cakes, wear new dresses, cook traditional food, visit churches for pray and exchange money to the children. It is the great event for Christians and a day of feast as well.

Children play games and exchange gifts and toys with their friends.

On 24th December, a day before Christmas, Christmas eve celebration begins.On this day, the Christmas-tree is manifested in its glory and the Midnight masses is originally celebrated by the Pope towards midnight.

Some countries where Christmas is celebrated

  Christmas is celebrated especially in the countries where Christians are in majority like USA, UK, France, Canada, Germany and Australia etc. different countries such as China, Japan, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia etc.

What does Christmas means?

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth day of Jesus Christ. Who according to Christians is the son of God.

The name Christmas derived from the Mass of Christ. A Mass service (which is often called Eucharist). Is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and will came to life. The “Christ-Mass” service was allowed to take place after sun set. So people had it in midnight, so in this way Christians had Christmas which was derived from “Christ-Mass”.

The Date of Christmas

 Jesus Christ’s birth date is unknown because there is little information about his early life. There is disagreement among scholars as well on when Jesus was born. Christians celebrate Jesus’ birthday on December 25. Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on or near January 7.

Christmas in Pakistan

   Christianity in Pakistan is the second largest religious minority community in Pakistan. The total population of Christians in Pakistan are approximately 1.6% of the population. Christians celebrate Christmas by visiting their relatives, singing carols, and in return the family offers something to the choir. They decorate their houses, cut cakes and cook delicious and traditional foods. Christmas celebrations are also popular with the urban middle class in the country with hotels, cafes, restaurants and theme parks hosting festivities and special events.

Santa Claus is generally depicted as a portly, jolly, white-berded man-sometimes with wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, a red hat with white fur and black leather belt and boots and who carries a bag full of gifts to the homes of well-behaved children on Christmas Eve. Actually Santa gives gifts to the poor children so that they may celebrate the festival well.

The Christmas tree is a decorated tree mostly an evergreen coniferous, trimmed with lights and decorations, is derived from a “paradise tree”, or the tree in the Garden of Eden. The Christmas tree is associated with the celebrations of Christmas.

In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which were ultimately replaced by Christmas lights after the advent of electrification.
